When AI Doesn't Simplify — It Amplifies

Sunday afternoons are usually my time to bring order to the chaos — sketching on whiteboards, sorting through the brain dump of scattered thoughts and ideas that accumulate like post-it notes on a messy working desk.

This weekend, I started about 18 hours ahead of schedule. Saturday evening, I was already deep in it — working alongside my “partner in crime” — an AI-augmented workspace I’ve been building and refining with Claude CLI.

And in parallel, I’ve been reading some thought-provoking pieces. The one that hit hardest: “AI Doesn’t Reduce Work — It Intensifies It” (HBR, Feb 2026).

The Observation

That HBR observation is playing out in real time across every item in my backlog — whether it’s:

  • A small analysis
  • A research thread
  • An architecture design
  • A proof of concept

What starts as a conversation to formalize and clarify a single piece of work swiftly triggers my own mind to branch into four or five new ideas and use cases.

The AI holds the context — but it’s the “Human I” that can’t stop connecting dots.

The “Human I” Effect

This is the part that caught me off guard.

I expected AI to make things converge faster — compress the thinking, narrow the scope, get to the answer. And it does, for each individual thread. But the moment one thread resolves, the clarity it produces opens up two more.

I park those in a mental “TBD” space — while having my AI assistant take a memory note of each one — and try to stay on the linear path within the same context.

But the ideas keep cooking.

It’s not that AI distracts. It’s that AI clarifies — and clarity is generative. When you see one thing clearly, you suddenly see three adjacent things you hadn’t noticed before.

The Gift and the Challenge

AI doesn’t just help you think faster. It helps you see more — and that’s both the gift and the challenge.

The gift: you spot patterns, connections, and opportunities that would have taken weeks to surface through manual work alone. Your backlog grows richer, not just longer.

The challenge: if you don’t manage the amplification deliberately, it becomes overwhelm. The branching never stops. Every solved problem illuminates three unsolved ones. Every deployed solution suggests four improvements.

The bottleneck was never the AI. It was always the “Human I” — and now that bottleneck has more throughput than ever.

What This Mandates

But here’s the thing: this reality is here to stay — invented by the “Human I,” after all.

What it mandates is that we reconsider our ways of working and learn to leverage it for what it truly is — a smart partner for our work, not a source of overwhelm.

The difference lies in how deliberately we choose to work with it:

  • Capture, don’t chase. When new ideas branch off, note them and return to the current thread. Don’t context-switch — let the ideas mature in the background.
  • Design for continuity. Memory files, decision logs, structured workspaces — these aren’t overhead. They’re the infrastructure that prevents amplification from becoming chaos.
  • Acknowledge the intensity. AI doesn’t make knowledge work “easier” in the way we hoped. It makes it denser. More ideas per hour, more connections per session, more decisions per week. That’s a feature, not a bug — if you’re ready for it.

I wrote before about building an AI-augmented workspace — designing for continuity rather than capability. That principle becomes even more critical now. Because when AI amplifies everything, the system around it needs to absorb the amplification without breaking.

The Bigger Picture

We’re still early in figuring out what it means to work with AI rather than just use AI. The tools are advancing fast. Our methods for integrating them into how we think, plan, and create? Those are still catching up.

The HBR piece was right: AI doesn’t reduce work. But I’d add a nuance — it doesn’t just intensify it, either. It amplifies it. The signal gets louder, not just the noise. And for those of us who thrive on connecting dots, that amplification is as energizing as it is demanding.

The question isn’t whether to embrace it. That ship has sailed. The question is: how deliberately are you designing your way of working with it?

You architect. AI amplifies. Together, you see further.
